Why is Summer the ideal motivational speaker for college students
I get it. I moved away from home for college to attend the University of Memphis on the Emerging Leaders scholarship. In addition to a few clothes and my computer, I brought my son with me yet still excelled in college.
From New Student Orientation Guide and Frosh Camp Counselor to Student Activities Council Chair and many leadership positions in my sorority, I was a leader on campus. For three of my four years in college, I worked an internship at Hilton Hotels Corporation to help provide for myself and take care of my son. In spite of my challenges and responsibilities, I graduated magna cum laude, was named Miss University of Memphis, and started my career with the National Basketball Association franchise, the Memphis Grizzlies. After a nearly 15-year corporate career, I became an entrepreneur. My involvement in college and in my career led to many awards including the Fogelman College of Business and Economics Outstanding Young Alumna and the University of Memphis Distinguished Young Alumna Award.
Although I have business degrees (I earned my MBA while I was working at the Memphis Grizzlies), I’m an educator. I’m a marketing and life skills professor. I was asked to create the life skills course because of my story and connection with college students. And I have been a mother for over half of my life. As a mother of young adult, I understand the challenges of today’s youth, their motivations, and their mindsets.
I speak Life and Leadership, Struggle and Success and everything in between. I have spoken to thousands of college students with one goal— to get them to realize everything college has to offer so that they graduate and position themselves for life after college.
As successful young adults.
