Why is Summer the ideal motivational speaker for teen parents?
As a high school sophomore, I stood out as a pregnant teenager. For most of my high school experience, I was a teenage mother. I was hurt, frustrated, and confused. I definitely didn’t know how to be a mother, and I was just beginning to understand myself. However, in spite of becoming a mother at 15, I was determined to beat the devastating statistics teen parents face. I got involved in extracurricular activities and became VP of my senior class and editor of the yearbook staff. I was voted Most Likely to Succeed and graduated number 8 in my class of over 200 students. I received limited support from my family and no support from the father or his family. With my two-year-old son, I earned a full leadership scholarship to college and set myself on a path for success in life. I graduated magna cum laude and was named Miss University of Memphis. I started a great corporate career including the NBA and FedEx, and I took care of myself and my son completely on my own. No child support and no welfare.
I published, Life After Birth: A Memoir of Survival and Success as a Teenage Mother, a book about my life then was featured on CNN Headline News and the 700 Club. I’m so humbled to say that it has helped a lot of teen mothers realize they beat the statistics teen moms face and be successful too.
As a motivational speaker, I can relate to teen mothers like only another teen mother can. I understand the unique challenges they face as they are pushed into adulthood and responsibility for another life while trying to figure out their own. One thing I know for sure is that teen pregnancy is not a death sentence to a teenager’s life or dreams. I inspire teen parents to overcome their obstacles and achieve ultimate success with their children.
