From Teen Mom to Purpose-Driven Leader: A Success Journey That Redefines the Narrative
People love to label you by your lowest moment.
Teen mom.
Statistic.
Setback.
But when I sat down with Chanielle Talbird, I did not see a label. I saw leadership.
And what stood out most in her teen mom success journey was not her brand, her books, or her growing influence in Memphis. It was her clarity.
Clarity Over Circumstance
Chanielle became a teenage mother at a time when many would have quietly rewritten her future for her. Society is quick to predict limitations. Quick to reduce potential. Quick to whisper, “This is as far as you will go.”
But she did not shrink.
She expanded.
She chose education.
She chose faith.
She chose vision.
And she kept choosing, even when responsibility felt heavy and personal heartbreak could have convinced her to settle.
That is the S.O. What! mindset in motion.
Overcome Obstacles.
Eliminate Excuses.
Calculate Choices.
Success is never accidental. It is intentional.
Defining Success Differently
What moved me most was not what Chanielle has built through Crochet With Chanielle or her work as an author of Have Your Cake and Eat It Too. It was who she decided to become.
She defines success in a way that requires courage.
Not applause.
Not status.
Not comparison.
For her, success is alignment with purpose and protecting her peace.
Let that sit with you for a moment.
Alignment with purpose requires self-awareness. Protecting your peace requires boundaries. Both require maturity.
In a world that pushes hustle over healing, her definition is powerful.
According to research shared by organizations like https://www.apa.org, resilience is built through meaning-making and supportive relationships. Chanielle embodies that truth. She did not allow her beginning to dictate her becoming.
Resilience in Real Time
Resilience is rarely loud.
It is early mornings when you are tired but determined.
It is late nights studying while rocking a baby.
It is choosing growth when excuses feel easier.
Her teen mom success journey reminds me why I do what I do through the S.O. What! Foundation. I know firsthand what it means to face unexpected motherhood and still choose purpose. That is why I share my story in Life After Birth and why I continue speaking to young women, college students, and organizations about leadership, identity, and choice.
Your starting point does not disqualify you.
Your daily decisions shape you.
If you have ever felt defined by a mistake, a season, or someone else’s opinion, I encourage you to explore more stories of resilience at https://summerowens.com/blog and reflect on your own journey.
Reflection: What Are You Choosing Today?
What label have you allowed to limit you?
What would change if you defined success for yourself instead of borrowing someone else’s definition?
Your life is not a headline. It is a story still being written.
I invite you to experience the full conversation with Chanielle and hear her heart for yourself. Then share it with a young woman who needs to know that her circumstances are not her ceiling.
Because your beginning is not your boundary.
And that is the heart of S.O. What!
