Andy Dolich S.O. What! Success Story
It seems like it was just yesterday that I landed my first job out of college.
It was with the Memphis Grizzlies in their inaugural season in Memphis.
Well, it was actually 20 years ago.
But I remember so many details very vividly including some specifically about the leadership of our President of Business Operations – Andy Dolich.
1. I looked forward to our All Staff meetings. Even in the often high-pressure world of sports, Andy Dolich always seemed so relaxed. So chill. So cool. Yet so effective. He empowered his leaders, and we had fun and made some incredible things happen.
2. Andy cared for my son (and still does). Because I often had my son in the office and at events with me out of necessity, everyone knew him. Andy Dolich bought him books and talked to him. He even had my son autograph a photo of himself, and Andy hung it in his office between autographed photos of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.
3. After earning my MBA I decided to pursue opportunities to earn more money and stop having to work all games and arena events plus regular business hours. On the day I quit my job as Marketing Manager for the Memphis Grizzlies, I let Andy’s assistant know that I wanted to meet with him. Instead of calling me to his office, he came to mine. With his always cool demeanor, he sat across from me and listened as I told him I was leaving. He knew I was doing what I needed to do as a single mother. I felt so respected, so appreciated, and so supported.
Working with Andy, I learned a lot about leadership and about taking your job seriously but still having fun and caring for those you lead.
I left the team in 2006. He’s since left the team and the city, but I’m extremely grateful to have worked with him and still be connected today. In this episode of S.O. What! Success Stories check out my interview with a front office sports legend and my friend.
