As college students at the predominantly white institution, the University of Memphis. We were often leaders together and our pictures were often included in promotional material together. And we stood out together.

We had a lot in common including continuing to give back to our alma mater through board service and other ways. But it wasn’t until nearly two decades later that I learned his powerful story. His story of getting to and through college (including a doctoral degree) and Dr. Mario Brown sudden responsibility as a caregiver.
