The Best Valentine’s Day Gift

15 years ago I got my first actual Valentine’s Day gift. It was an engagement ring.
That was preceded by a short dating relationship, 11 years as a single mother and a strong desire to have a companion and a father figure for my son. It was followed by a marriage that neither my husband at the time, my son, or I was ready for. And led to divorce less than two years later.
Valentine’s Day in my marriage was hard. Valentine’s Day for a few years after my divorce was hard. Then it was back to like it was before I got married. I was happily single and Valentine’s Day was just another day. Well, I loved on my son a little harder on that day.
But I knew a lot of people who were single but not at all happily so. Valentine’s Day was a painful reminder that they were single or that they were in relationships like my marriage where Valentine’s Day was sad.
So I created the Love Yourself Event as a fundraiser for the nonprofit I started, The S.O. What! Foundation. For four years it has served as a reminder to women and men, single or in relationships that regardless of your status the first person to love and take care of is Yourself.
