My conversation with Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy reminded me how often leadership is misunderstood. Many people see the title before they ever see the person. What stood out to me was not the position Steve holds, but the consistency required to lead when decisions are questioned, motives are challenged, and outcomes are judged publicly.

Steve’s journey into leadership did not begin in the spotlight.

He spoke about growing up in a working class home, working multiple jobs to stay in college, and navigating a path rooted in service and responsibility. Those experiences shaped how he approaches leadership today, especially when the stakes are high and the margin for error feels small.

What made this conversation especially meaningful was his reflection on stepping into the role of District Attorney during a time marked by tragedy and intense scrutiny.
