Resilience and Failing Forward: The Story of Kim Karr
What Happens When Failure Does Not Get the Final Word?
Some conversations make me think about the moments we keep carrying long after they happen. That was one of the things that stayed with me during my conversation with Kim Karr.
As we talked, I kept thinking about how many people are still moving through life with an old label, an old doubt, or an old experience quietly shaping what they believe they can do. You can be accomplishing things, helping people, and making an impact while still having to remind yourself that what happened before does not get to decide who you are now.
What stood out to me most was the way Kim’s story reflected resilience and failing forward. Not as a perfect process. Not as something that happens after everything feels clear. But as a choice to keep learning, keep adjusting, and keep serving even when doubt is still present.
The Labels We Carry Longer Than We Should
Kim shared how being held back in third grade because of dyslexia affected the way she saw herself. That kind of experience can stay with a person, especially when it happens early and starts to shape what they believe about their ability.
You might recognize this in your own life. Maybe someone made you feel less capable. Maybe a challenge made you question whether you were smart enough, prepared enough, or strong enough. Maybe you moved forward, but part of you still remembers the moment when confidence became harder to hold onto.
What I appreciated about this conversation was how personal that part felt. Kim did not stay defined by that experience, but she also did not pretend it never mattered. That tension is real, and I think a lot of people are living inside it.
Sometimes resilience begins when you stop letting one chapter explain your whole life.
Resilience and Failing Forward Are Not Always Loud
One part of our conversation that really made me reflect was the idea of failing forward. It sounds simple, but living it requires a different kind of courage.
Failure can make you want to stop, shrink, or question everything about yourself. It can make you believe that one mistake or one difficult season says more about you than it actually does. But resilience and failing forward ask something different from us.
If you have ever failed and felt tempted to make that failure your identity, this conversation speaks directly into that space. It made me think about how important it is to keep learning from what happened without allowing it to become the final word.
Sometimes failing forward looks like trying again. Sometimes it looks like asking for support. Sometimes it looks like admitting something was hard while still choosing not to quit.
Purpose Can Grow From the Hard Places
Kim spent 13 years as a teacher before co-founding Digital4Good, a movement that helps students use the internet and social media in more positive ways. Her work now reaches students, teachers, school administrators, and communities, but what stayed with me was how connected her service seemed to her own story.
If you have ever wondered whether your challenge could become part of how you help someone else, this part of the conversation may speak to you. The very thing that once made you feel uncertain may become part of how you connect with others more honestly.
That does not mean every painful experience has to be neatly explained. It does not mean the hard things were easy or necessary. But it does make me think about how our experiences can shape our empathy, our leadership, and the way we choose to show up for people who need support.
Sometimes what we survive becomes part of how we serve.
Final Reflection
What old label are you still carrying into new opportunities?
Where are you focusing more on the gap than the gain?
What would change if you saw failure as something to learn from instead of something that gets to define you?
If you have been questioning your ability, your purpose, or your next step, I want you to watch this conversation with Kim Karr for yourself. Her story offers a real look at resilience and failing forward, and there is so much more in the conversation than I could fully capture here.
